Hi I'm Richard Mullen, President, I was born and raised in the Lafayette area, graduating from West Lafayette Sr. High School.I grew up in the family business, cleaning up the shop, riding with the drivers and other various jobs, for pop & candy money. When I turned 16 it was legal for me to drive a tow truck for my father, so I started towing cars & semis on my own.I have been involvedwith the Wabash Township Fire Dept, and an active member of the Indiana Towing & Wrecker Association ( both of which our father helped start ) holding offices from chapter director up thru chairman of the board. I have also served on committies such as legislative and trade show. For 20yrs I was involved with doing the annual fireworks shows in the lafayette & Monticello area.
Memories. The Blizzard of 1978
Naturally, I’ve seen a lot but the blizzard of 1978 really sticks in my mind. We received a call that an ambulance and fire truck had slid off the road in Benton County, Indiana. The woman in the ambulance was in labor and headed for the hospital in Lafayette, Indiana. I was dispatched with my co-worker to rescue the parents-to-be and recover the vehicle. The weather was too dangerous to send only one driver. After we pulled the vehicles out with our tow truck, we loaded the father-to-be into our truck, and we drove him to the hospital. We were breaking through four foot snow drifts with the tow truck to make way for the ambulance. Mom made it to the hospital, in the ambulance, with just 30 minutes to spare.
The Ridiculous. The Remarkable. The Bizzare
I’ve seen ridiculous, stupid, remarkable, and bizarre things happen to vehicles. Look at the photo gallery to see a few examples, such as drivers careening into buildings, or driving their cars off the car wash rails. Just when I think I’ve seen it all, Some one does something new.
Helping People is Our Mission
I’ve also assisted with extrication of people trapped inside them. It doesn’t matter how beat up a vehicle gets, what’s tough is when people get hurt, or worse. One of my most vivid memories involves a school bus transporting children. I was called out to a wreck on 52S, where a school bus was rammed by a dump truck. The kids in the back were hurt , but everyone, thank God, survived.
My Family
I have been married to my wife Teresa for over 22 yrs, we have 4 children, 2 girls & 2 boys, all of which are grown and married. We have 7 grandchildren, 4 girls & 3 boys. In 2008 we added to our family with the guardianship of a 16 yr old girl. I can't forget my dog Peyton. Over the yrs we have unofficially adopted several children and their children. I like to spend what spare time I have with my family, water skiing, tubing and many other activities. That also includes Peyton ( he's my little buddy ). I also try to find time to race my1/8 scale R/C nitro monster truck.
